Summary

I'm just going to assume Goodreads doesn't have the version I have because I scanned it in but mine definitely has more than 484 pages😅。 I'm just going to assume Goodreads doesn't have the version I have because I scanned it in but mine definitely has more than 484 pages😅。 。。。more

All The Easter Eggs If you think you have a good hold on Tolkien’s Legendarium, and have read Lord of The Rings and the Silmarillion, this is a great supplement of short/unfinished stories。 Christopher Tolkien’s extremely thorough footnotes help to tie everything together, and relate his father’s otherwise sundry, disjointed storylines into a unified, albeit somewhat encyclopedic exploration of Middle Earth。 This book is all the Easter eggs in one basket。

As much as I love The Hobbit and LOTR, Tolkien holds in reserve the depths to which his world-building and character development extend for these 'deep cut' volumes like The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, etc。。 Even I had to check my 'Nerd of the Rings' card at the door as this book too often strayed into territory I could only classify as 'wow, who cares' too often and I was reduced to skimming through much of it。 As much as I love The Hobbit and LOTR, Tolkien holds in reserve the depths to which his world-building and character development extend for these 'deep cut' volumes like The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, etc。。 Even I had to check my 'Nerd of the Rings' card at the door as this book too often strayed into territory I could only classify as 'wow, who cares' too often and I was reduced to skimming through much of it。 。。。more

Much better than The Silmarillion。 While the stores here are, of course, fragmentary, and some actually have been purposefully left incomplete with notes that refer back to The Silmarillion to fill in the blanks, the narrative is quite strong at times。 The story of the children of Hurin is fantastic, even if clipped and missing its centrepiece (you have to go to The Silmarillion for the whole tale, or that separate hardcover)。 Same with the story of Tuor。 I wish there was a proper ending to Alda Much better than The Silmarillion。 While the stores here are, of course, fragmentary, and some actually have been purposefully left incomplete with notes that refer back to The Silmarillion to fill in the blanks, the narrative is quite strong at times。 The story of the children of Hurin is fantastic, even if clipped and missing its centrepiece (you have to go to The Silmarillion for the whole tale, or that separate hardcover)。 Same with the story of Tuor。 I wish there was a proper ending to Aldarion and Erendis。 All the stories here are tragic。 The prevailing mood here, as in pretty much all of Tolkien, is bittersweet。 Good prevails, in the end, but at tremendous cost。A fair number of chapters are more like gazetteer entries, though, and aren’t essential。 Some of them do provide interesting information, at least。 There is one on the movement of the Nazgul as they hunt for Baggins and the ring at the start of Fellowship。 Another on the line of Numenorean kings。 That sort of stuff。Still, at times, I really found myself wishing that Christopher Tolkien had been more of a writer。 His father left some great idea behind, many of which were more than half formed and could have been completed with less effort than went into tracking down and assessing every scrap or Scribble than JRR left behind。 Some of these stories should be finished。 。。。more

My precioussss。 。。。more

The standout story in here was Aldarion and Erendis, for showing characters with depth, agency, and problems - sad as the story is。The details of Tuor and Gondolin were also interesting, as was some of the details surrounding Isiludur's last days, and the origins of the Istari。But the rest of the book was as unnecessary as it was unfinished。 The standout story in here was Aldarion and Erendis, for showing characters with depth, agency, and problems - sad as the story is。The details of Tuor and Gondolin were also interesting, as was some of the details surrounding Isiludur's last days, and the origins of the Istari。But the rest of the book was as unnecessary as it was unfinished。 。。。more

I find this hard to rate。 I'm finally going with 5 because there's just so much stuff in it, coupled with a fantastic job of editing and elucidation done by Christopher。Some of it is certainly a bit dry and hard-going but that's just the nature of the beast considering the scope of what Tolkien was trying to achieve。That's basically all I'm going to say。 The details of what's included can be found elsewhere。Definitely hope to read again, possibly multiple times。 I find this hard to rate。 I'm finally going with 5 because there's just so much stuff in it, coupled with a fantastic job of editing and elucidation done by Christopher。Some of it is certainly a bit dry and hard-going but that's just the nature of the beast considering the scope of what Tolkien was trying to achieve。That's basically all I'm going to say。 The details of what's included can be found elsewhere。Definitely hope to read again, possibly multiple times。 。。。more

How did Gandalf persuade Thorin to take a Hobbit with him on this adventure? The Istari - An amazing collection of writings by Tolkien detailing the 'Order of Wizards' that Gandalf is a part of。The Palantiri - A short essay which provides more detail on what the Palantiri were and how they came into the possession of the likes of Saruman。 This is an incredible book and shows how much Tolkien wrote about Middle-Earth and how obsessive he was about details。 However, it also shows how this obsessive nature was also a curse as Christopher continually has to apologise for errors and contradictions。 He provides dates for information to try and deduce which section should be trusted more。 It is unimaginable to think what more Tolkien had in store for Middle-Earth。 But sadly, that is something we will never know。 Unfinished Tales is an incredibly heavy and long read but is definitely well worth it for those who desire more from the Middle-Earth universe。 。。。more

An amazing book for Tolkien enthusiasts! In the first half you get a shortened story (e。g。 the fall of Gondolin) and a lot of additional information about the circumstances。 The second part is more of an informative part and less a story (what are the Palantíri? From where do the Istari come? What are the Drúedain?)。 The big chapters are divided into the Ages of Arda。 The notes are written by Christopher Tolkien, who was one of the last people who really knew Tolkien's World。 An amazing book for Tolkien enthusiasts! In the first half you get a shortened story (e。g。 the fall of Gondolin) and a lot of additional information about the circumstances。 The second part is more of an informative part and less a story (what are the Palantíri?
